Sigma Phi Beta Fraternity, a 501(c)7 nonprofit corporation headquartered in Tempe, Arizona, is a gay-straight allied college fraternity operating within the traditional Greek system. We formed in July 2005 as a “national” organization when our founding chapter at Arizona State University, which has been in existence since 2001, elected to create a parent organization.
Our founding chapter has always recognized the importance of community service and charitable giving, and that's a tradition the national organization wants to continue. When our members participate in philanthropic efforts, we are fulfilling our purpose to build character in gay, straight, bisexual and transgender male college students through social and meaningful activities that will empower them in their future endeavors.
The fraternity will designate a charity annually to be the National Philanthropy. Our organization is in its infancy, and most of our supporters are college students or recent graduates. In taking this initial step, we expect our philanthropic goals to increase over the years and that our members will continue to support philanthropic efforts as they become leaders in their respective industries.
Sigma Phi Beta Fraternity has designated the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network (GLSEN) as the 2007 National Philanthropy. We chose GLSEN because we recognize the significance of GLSEN's work. We feel GLSEN's mission is in line with our own. Sigma Phi Beta Fraternity promotes equality and respect by providing Queer and Allied men in college with a uniquely diverse safe space within the traditional Greek fraternity system. We believe GLSEN's programs truly empower students, creating a safe space for them to thrive.
From GLSEN Founder and Executive Director Kevin Jennings
"GLSEN is pleased and honored to be selected as Sigma Phi Beta's first national philanthropic partner. Members of Sigma Phi Beta know better than most the realities that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students face in America's schools. Their support for our vision—a future where every child learns to accept and respect all people, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity—will help ensure safer, more inclusive schools for all students who follow in their footsteps."
